Blogathon day 31- last day!!!

Well this is it! The last day of Blogathon! I made it 30 out of 31 days!

This was a huge growing experience for me and one of the hardest things I've ever done. And I must say that I am thrilled it's over!!!

I would like to say congrats to those who made it all 31 days! It's not an east thing to do! Maybe next year I can make it all 31 days!

Blogathon Day 30- waiting

Waiting/ patience is the worst.

Im waiting to hear back from my MRI the other day and I'm still in a lot of pain. All I want is to know whats wrong and for it to be fixed.

Waiting for an interview is rough.. Today we turn in our applications for editor and manager positions for next year. With in the next two weeks we'll find who they are.

I hate waiting!

Blogathon Day 29- Two Months

In exactly two months I turn 19! whoo hoo!!!!

I am still really disappointed in myself for forgetting to blog on the 27th :( I was determined to do all 31 days. Guess i'll just have to shoot for 30 out of 31!

I just finished my application for Design manager for Clarks newspaper for fall 2012! Im one step closer to my dreams!

My parents have never really been supportive of my career choice, my dad in particular. He, along with thousands more, thinks journalism and graphic design is dying and there isn't any career opportunities for me, or at least there won't be by the time in done with college. I disagree. While newspaper popularity is clearly declining, people still need the news, and they are more likely to look at it if its visually appealing, so in my mind I have picked the perfect job! not only are there tons of opportunities for me, I love it! I refuse to work in a cubical hating my life and job just because it makes good money! Happiness is far more important to me than money.

That's my shpeel for today!

Blogathon day 28- forgot to blog

I made it 26 days. I forgot to blog last night. :/ I was doing so good. I am going to continue to blog until the end though.

Blogathon day 26- uh oh

I'm starting to get sick. :/
We only have 14 days of class left. And I'm running myself dry.
All I need is to sleep for a few days and I'll be good!!

Blogathon day 25- sound slides

Today we worked on our sound slides and I do not like it. We didn't have audio to go with it so we couldn't do timed slides. It was frustrating.

We also discussed ch. 6 from Journalism next about photography. Mark Briggs said that simple and cropped photos make good photos. And I have to strongly disagree. People can be natural photographers. He basically said if you take a bunch of photographs you'll become a good photographer and you're pictures will turn out great. But I know that's not true.

Blogathon day 24- addiction and technology

I have two things I wanted to write about today. Addiction and technology.

I recently gave up all coffee, energy drinks and pop. I was getting coffee everyday before school, and multiple energy drinks durning school and drinking pop every night at work. My body was relying on all of this to function. I am happy to say it has been a week since I had coffee, energy drinks and pop. The first couple days were rough. I had really bad head aches and was super tired, but now, I feel incredibly better, and I'm not as tired anymore. I am drinking only water and i must say it has made a world of difference in just a week. I no longer rely on caffeine to function.

I got an iPhone about two weeks ago and i absolutely love it! Since then, I have been blogging with the blogger app, except for today. I also have gotten a lot of photography apps and have been playing with those. I got a recording app for my multimedia class as well. With being a student journalist, this phone has really helped me the the change of multimedia journalism. The world of journalism is changing and i am proud to be apart of it, even if in the smallest way.

Blogathon day 23- evacuation drill

Today at Clark we had a campus wide evacuation drill, including all satellite campuses.
I went out during multimedia journalism and got pictures of the people in charge of the drill who were setting up the assembly areas and get some before shots of the campus.
Once the drill started I was stationed between the parking lot getting any pictures of students who left during the drill and the assembly area outside the student center.
This was an interesting experience for me.
Overall, whether the drill was effective or not doesn't matter! The fact that we had a handful of Indy staff all around the school covering it was impressive.
Journalism at its finest.

Blogathon day 22- injuries

I was a dancer in high school and have been most of my life, so injuries were common for me.

I often found myself taped or wrapped. Once even in a cast in the middle of competition season.

Now that I am out of high school and not dancing competitively anymore. Getting an injury has been a whole new experience.

I went snowboarding a few months ago and had a nasty fall and did something to my elbow. I didn't think anything of it until three months later I still can not straighten it and it's swollen really bad.

I finally decided to go to the doctor but of course the X-ray came back normal, however my elbow does not look normal in any way.

My doctor believes there is a loose piece of cartilage just floating around that has healed in the wrong spot causing the swelling and my being unable to straighten my arm.

Now an MRI is in in order for later this week. Hopefully we can get this sorted out and no cast or surgery is needed.

P.S. I hate doctors offices.

Blogathon day 21- poetry

Today is Haiku day, and I am not participating in it. I have nothing against poets, I just hate poetry.

I was forced to do it in high school and it ruined it for me.

I have tried to write it but it's just not my thing.

Blogathon Day 20- College

I only have 4 weeks left of my first year of College.

Going into college as a young kid, just out of high school, who still had no idea who I wanted to be or what I wanted to do with my life, and still very uncertain of my choice in college, I have come a long way and I have learned a lot.

Fall Quarter:
I was in Math 089, English 098 and for a day Art 115.
I switched out of Art 115 because it was a huge class, and expected a lot out of you, I wasn't ready for that.

Winter Quarter:
I Was in Math 091, English 101 and Journalism 101.
Winter quarter I became a lot more comfortable with the school and started to get a feel for who I was and what I wanted to do.
I fell in love with Journalism. And as soon as I found out that the current design manager was leaving Clark after Spring quarter I jumped at that opportunity because that is exactly what I want to do!

Spring Quarter:
I am in English 102, Journalism 111 (multimedia Journalism) and Journalism 121 (newspaper).
English 102 has been a lot of work, lots of research, which isn't my favorite!
Multimedia journalism has been a lot of fun, I'm excited for the photo journalism part of it that were about to start!
And Newspaper has been a whole new experience that i think has made me grow a back bone a little bit. The Design Manager isn't comfortable with me designing pages, which is completely understandable, i was the same way when i was design editor for my high school yearbook. But my Editor-in-Cheif has helped me get over the fear of him and take charge since i will be in that position next Fall.

All in All, College has taught me quite a bit, but i still have three years to go, and so much more to learn. And i am nothing but excited!

Blogathon day 19- baseball

This has absolutely nothing to do with journalism in any way.

But I love baseball.

I get to spend the day out in the sun watching my boyfriend umpire and little kids play a sport they are passionate about.

I love baseball.

Seeing little kids out doing something they love and being active is such a good thing.

I don't know any of these people but I still love watching no matter what!

Blogathon day 18- photo journalism

Today in multimedia we talked about photo journalism.

We watched a video about it, that included photos.

Being a photography minor this really interests me. I'm excited for the next assignment to do photo journalism.

Blogathon Day 17- Audio Interview

This is the interview I did of my friend and classmate, Kyle Yasumiishi.

This is the first time I've ever done anything like this so its pretty rough, but not too bad for the first try!

blogathon day 15- half way

Well were half way through this blogathon!

I must say its hard coming up with things to blog about on days I don't have class.

I still don't know what i am doing my audio story on for multimedia. Nothing has inspired me yet. I don't want to just come up with something to get the assignment done, I want a story that'll actually mean something to me, and other people.

If anyone has any ideas, please leave a comment and let me know! :)

Blogathon day 14- audio recording

Today in multimedia journalism we did audio recording.

I just got a new I phone so rather than use the class recorders I used a recording app.

I recorded my friend, Kyle Yasumiishi

Going back an listening to the recording was really hard. I do not like listening to my self at all.

I really wish there was a way to listen to an interview with out hearing myself!

Now I just need to make an audio story by the end of the week. And I have no idea what it's going to be about so I anyone has any ideas please let me know!

Blogathon day 13- mothers day

Well today was pretty low key! I worked 6-2 and my mom worked 7-7 so we are just now doing our mothers day celebration.

My mother is an amazing woman. She had her first child at 20, and her last at 30. She started nursing school when she was 34, she has been working as a nurse for 10 years and is getting her masters degree as a nurse practitioner. My mother is remarkable. Being able to go to school full time, work full time and raise 5 children is incredible. She has shown me anything is possible

Happy mothers day to my mom and all other mothers out there!!!

Blogathon Day 12- Success

Today my brother graduated from college. He received a bachelors degree in biology from WSU:Vancouver. He is the first child to graduate from college out of five. He is the third born.

I am right after him, so i have always been compared to him all my life. He got straight A's in high school, so i was expected to get straight A's. This didn't happen with any other siblings. I graduated high school with a 3.9 GPA, yet my parents don't expect the same from my little brother like they did with me after my older brother who graduated with a 4.0. In college he received Cum Laude, which is a GPA of 3.5-3.69.

My brother is also my manager at subway so I'm compared to him there too. He is an incredibly hard worker, and always has been. He started working when he was 14 with his own yard work business and then started working at subway when he was in high school, now he's 22 and a college graduate. But not done yet. He leaves for Med School in August.

My brother is my inspiration. He is the hardest most dedicated person i know, besides my parents. He is the reason i am so motivated to do good in school, and be a good worker. My brother is my role model.

blogathon day 11- what i did today

Today i started working on the design for the advertisement for the clark website, other than a few technical things, it went really well and is looking really good.

I took my little brother to turn in applications for jobs, and of course he applied at subway, luckily not the same one i work at.

tomorrow my brother graduates from college and then is off to med school in august.

thats all, i don't have time to really say much, hopefully ill get back into the swing of things after this weekend!

Blogathon day 10- nothing to say

Well its getting late and i still need to blog, so this is my blog. nothing inspired me today.

other than i got an iPhone 4ios and i love it! i can't wait to explore the things with multimedia journalism that i can do with with it!

that is all for today.

Blogathon Day 9- Getting Difficult

Well were 9 days in, and this is starting to get harder, and a little frustrating.

I have absolutely no motivation to do this, other than I need the extra credit for my class.

Were learning more audio in multimedia journalism, were editing the recordings that we did on Monday.

Issue 12 for newspaper came out today. I found a pretty big mistake just a few minutes after we got the paper. We did an online poll asking students if they care about ASCC taking our voting rights away. The paper said "66% don't care" and "34% don't care" It should say, "66% don't care" and "34% care"

My editor-in-chief was saying before the paper arrived that all though he would love the paper to be flawless, he had a feeling that there was something wrong. and he was right.

If they had a fresh pair of eyes go through and look at the paper before they send it out for print, these things wouldn't happen, or at least be less common.

Blogathon Day 8- Production day

Today is the second production day for The Independent, Clarks student run newspaper.

I am observing York, the Design Manager, trying to get a feel for what these days are like.

So far, stressful is the best way to describe it.

They've had me design a few pages with stories from old issues just to get a feel for the program and what to do. Its been awhile since i have done this kind of stuff, but I'm getting better at it.

Designing a newspaper is a lot different than a yearbook. A lot more words than pictures. So thats a big change for me. Hopefully i can get some pages for the next issue to design!

Blogathon Day 7- Journalism and Caffeine

If you look in a newsroom, Clarks in particular, you don't just see Journalist hard at work, you see all different types of caffeine.

Coffee, Rockstars, Redbull, Mosters. Long hours and this is how you get through it.

Today in particular everyone seems to be tired, and coffee and rockstars are all around the room.

Gotta Love Caffeine!

Blogathon Day 6- My Great Grandma

My great grandma was huge on reading and writing. She spent all of her life teaching kids to read, whether it was her own kids, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, or kids at the library she worked at.

I would like to share a poem she wrote that was read at her memorial service yesterday,

Tiny handprints on the pane
Signs of wee ones here again
Little memos left behind
On Grandma's windows freshly shined
Button nose pressed to outdoors
Watching Grandpa at his chores
Memories that make us smile
Think we'll leave then there awhile.

By Grandma Esther B. Anderson
Dallas, Oregon

This poem was published.

My great grandma was an incredible woman, and after her passing, I think that my entire family, extended relatives included, will think twice when it comes to going out with friends or spending time with family. Family was the most important thing to my grandmother, and I hope someday i can make a difference like she did.

RIP Great Grandma Anderson, I love you!

Blogathon Day 5- Short n' sweet

Well today's post will be nice a short!

Im leaving town for my great grandmas memorial service.

My grandma was 90 years old when she passed away. She had been with her husband for 70+ years, they had 7 children, 21 grandchildren, and their 51st great grandchild will be born this summer.

She was a wonderful woman, and is now resting peacefully, no longer in pain.

RIP Great Grandma Anderson
I love and miss you!

Blogathon, Day 4- Audio Recording

Well I must say, this month is already going by fast. And blogging everyday really isn't that hard. But were only four days in.

Today in multimedia journalism we learned out to use the audio recorders and interviewed our classmates. Im not that great at interviewing, but I liked being interviewed. Although hearing yourself in the playback was really weird. Im not a huge fan of hearing my self on audio, I sound completely different than I think I do.

I got to use these new audio recording skills after newspaper to interview students around campus about how they feel about ASCC (Associated Students of Clark College) changing students elections to students being appointed. Most didn't really care, only because they didn't really know about it. Some were astounded by the fact that this was going on, and that students deserved their say.

A lot of students asked us if as a newspaper staff if we could change this. It was in a way flattering to think that some people think we have that much power. We explained that we can't change how ASCC works, just that we report the news and whats going on around campus.

A little side note: If you know you have to be walking around campus interviewing people, don't wear heels!

Blogathon, Day 3- How it all started

I had a great idea for what I was going to blog today, but then I took a nap, and now for the life of me can't remember what it was.

So now I thought I should explain how exactly I got into graphic design and journalism.

My Junior year of high school, I needed an elective, so I took Yearbook. I went into this class with absolutely no experience and no idea what I was doing. By the 4th week into the class, I had fallen in love. With designing.

My teacher asked me to take over the Design Editor position, I jumped at the opportunity! But, life always has its obstacles. I was also enrolled in AP Photography my Junior year, and second semester, yearbook and AP photography were the same class period. So i was unable to take over the design editor position for the next semester.

Second semester i went back and forth between the classes, still helping with the yearbook, but also trying to finish my AP Portfolio.

When senior year rolled around, we had all our editors set, Kaitie-Editor and Chief, Kellyn- Design editor, Kaitlyn-Journlism editor, Kendall-Photo Editor and Megan-Photo editor. And we had a new teacher. No one was thrilled about the switch in teachers.

The first half the year was rough. The new teacher didn't realize that for the most part yearbook was a student run class. Aside from the struggles from the teacher in the beginning of the year, things turned around and she let us do our thing, and we produced a fantastic yearbook.

As I graduated high school in June 2011, I had no idea where I was going for college or what I wanted to do with my life.

I started the summer thinking I was going to attend BYU-Idaho in January 2012, but then spent a month in Florida nannying, where I realized I couldn't be far away from home. I wasn't ready to leave.

Now I'm in my 3rd quarter at Clark College. My first quarter I took, Math, English, and a 2-d design class. I ended up dropping out of the design class, it wasn't what I was looking for at all. Second quarter I was signed up for math and english again, but my dad wanted me to be full time so i had to find another class that was open and at least 2 credits. I stumbled upon Journalism 101. Again, I fell in love.

A little after the half way mark of Winter quarter, Jim Evans (Editor-in-Chief of Clark College student run newspaper, The Independent, and Jackson Zeiner (Opinion Editor) came into our class trying to get people to sign up for Newspaper. They mentioned a Design Manager.

The design manager does the layout of the newspaper. The current design manager (Bradley York, aka York) is graduating this year, along with all the other editors. So as soon as mentioned that I was into design, the advisor for Newspaper, Dee Anne, made sure that i would shadow York this quarter, and learn his ways!

As of right now I have only shadowed York, but will soon be helping design a few pages.

Blogathon, Day 2-Discouraged

Today in multimedia journalism, we are discussing our audiences for our blogs.
As we go around as a class, and more than half the class has an idea of who their audience is, I do not.
I am becoming more and more discouraged with my blog.
Although I don't have a specific topic, I still hope that people read this blog.
As a requirement for multimedia journalism we had to create a twitter. Before the class started I had a twitter, but never used it. At the beginning of the quarter I had 6 tweets after 4 months of having a twitter. now, at 43 tweets, I have started to really get into it.
When my teacher, Bill, asked why and how I got into twitter, but am having trouble with Blogging, I said in twitter I interact with people, not just students from my class, but others around Vancouver.
Being able to see how many people view yours posts on each day and each post, seeing that no one has even read my last two posts, is discouraging.
Is my blog even going to make difference?

Blogathon, Day 1

Today marks the beginning of May, one of the hardest months for everyone. For students, its a month before school is out, its getting warmer outside which makes it hard to focus in school. But most importantly it marks the beginning of BLOGATHON 2012. I got into blogging because of my journalism 111 class (multimedia Journalism) and we are required to blog. I have had some issues with this, I'm not a huge blogger, and I don't really know what exactly I'm supposed to blog about. So once I heard about this blogathon I knew it would be a great way to get me into blogging. Every day for 31 days is a challenge, not only for me, but most likely others as well, people who like blogging and are used to it.
Seeing as I want to be a Journalist/graphic designer, I should be able to do this very well, and hopefully over time I'll get better at it. But as of now, this is it. This is all I can do. Explain how I'm feeling about this whole situation.
